3 Ways to Beat Stress Before it Starts
How many times do we walk into our place of work and think to ourselves “Why am I here?” I don’t know about you but my answer goes something like this. “I owe, I owe, So it’s off to work I go!” It all boils down to stress. How do we beat stress? Most of us have heard about diet and exercise being key to help. Then there is breathing exercises and yoga. I have heard of so many ways. Most of them I looked up because I too asked myself why I was where I was.
Today we are going to talk about 3 ways (out of the many) that might help alleviate stress before it starts. If nothing else I hope to provide you with something to minimize it. I have found that taking a shower in the morning, going for a walk, and meditation can all be very regular habits we can create that can help beat stress before it starts.
Taking a Shower
Think of how the water sounds when you first turn it on. The mist or bullets that come from the shower head. Then when you step into the spray, How does it feel? Do you like your water warm or on the chilly side. I like my showers in the evening but if I could take them before leaving for work I would because the water relaxes me. It also wakes me up more efficiently. Right now I rely on my coffee and if it’s not strong enough then my day doesn’t go as well because I’m tired. As a result I stress out more easily.
Going For a Walk
Now if you take the more physical approach there are several benefits aside from just the stress benefit. Taking a walk gets all the endorphins running and puts a natural stress on your heart. When we stress out our hearts are one part of the body that suffer the most. When we exercise we are working the heart muscle and making it stronger. I use to take a walk around the block before work. It was very helpful and I benefited greatly.
There are many different types of meditation. Meditation is concentrating on one topic, thought, word or something and thinking about it and only it over and over again. One type of meditation is called worry. When we worry we are thinking about whatever the topic of worry is over and over. So all we need to do is focus our attention on a different topic. Something positive. If we can take 5 minutes a day to think of a positive topic and how to incorporate it into our daily lives for just that day we could lower our stress.
How do we beat stress?
Yesterday I learned something important. Somebody told me that if I think about a negative situation in the past that is causing me stress to ask myself this question. Is there anything I can do about this situation now? If the answer is no, then I am to focus on something else. This is harder than it sounds, I know. So I am waiting for it to get a little easier. She said it will get easier with practice. I will let you know how it goes.
I know we were suppose to be focusing on exercise coming up in the month of June but I have been a little distracted. Sorry to say In the last two weeks I have only made it maybe three times. This week I have been super tired and last week my work had us working tens all week. So ten hours plus the two driving time kept me quite busy. I am on my way to being a stay at home mom though and while I am super excited, there is some fear. Learn more about that here.
