How To Get Well From A Cold Quicker
Well. This house hold has been sick this past week. I have been considering how to get well quicker. We haven’t left the house much and no gym visits this past week. Between running noses and coughing, there is just no way for us to make it this week. So I have been looking at the ways we stay well and observing that we haven’t been doing that the last 3 weeks that I have been home. Maybe that is why we all got sick. What can I say, I am out of practice.
The sad part is that I’m not out of practice, but I did become complacent for a while. I even forgot to take my maca powder that I have been taking to level out my hormones. And I paid the price for that. The last week we were at the gym, I spent a majority of the time in the bathroom crying. That was when I realized I had not been taking my medicine. Super emotional outburst are a sure sign of something going wrong.
So What did I forget this time?
My two year old has a had a rough time of it as far as sickness is concerned. When he was four months old, he contracted whooping cough. Whooping cough is very dangerous to have at such an early age. He and the entire household had to go on anti-biotic due to how contagious the disease is. It is one of the ones they start inoculating us for when we are little. To avoid scenarios like the one my boy went through.
Anyway after he was done with the anti-biotic he continued to cough. While he was no longer contagious, he could not stop coughing. I’m not sure if it was due to having to take anti-biotic at such an early age, but the result was sickness. Lots of it. He caught a cold very easily, making it so that he was sick every other month. He spent more time sick than any other child I know. I was able to start giving him probiotics around 16 months.
I found a probiotic that I actually could have begun giving him sooner but didn’t know. The thing I found out is that the probiotics kept him well and when he got sick reduced his sick time. This was an awesome thing to learn as I also had problems with sickness. I use to smoke and it weakened my immune system. So I also began taking probiotics.
What happened is that I forgot. I forgot what was helping us. I got so caught up in the not having to work anymore and the new life that we are trying to create that I forgot about the things that were keeping us healthy all along. You may be asking yourself,” How could you forget something so important?” To be honest I’m not sure I have a good enough answer to that. At least it’s not good enough for me, so I’m not gonna try and feed it to you.
But the big question is, ” What do I do about it now that I have messed it up?”
Restart the probiotics
Probiotics replace all the good bacteria after having to take antibiotics. They are also good at helping your gut to digest food more effectively and balances your body’s good and bad bacteria. My son also has a problem with constipation. When I give him his probiotics regularly we don’t have to deal with it at all. I have glycerin to help in emergency situations but I would rather just give him the probiotics and natural foods to help with such things. For more and better info on probiotics click here.
Lot’s of liquids
One of the things doctors tell you if you have sickness is lots of fluids and rest. This is because the fluids will flush your system helping to rid the body of unwanted toxins. So water, juice and pedialyte are very good for our situation right now. Fruit can be used also if you have a hard time with lots of juice or fluids. Fluids will always be better but fruit has juice in it as well. If you want to get well quicker though then drink the fluids. My boy has not been getting the fluids he needs because everyone has to keep taking away his juice and water. He has decided it is fun to spit it back out. He is two. So this is normal. With my being home I can make sure he is actually drinking it!
Another big one is rest. I love having my schedule. I love planning and trying to multitask and in some circumstances that is a good thing. When I get sick though I also need to follow the docs advice. Fluids and rest. I have been so busy trying to learn all this computer stuff that I have been over working myself. I need to pace myself and be patient with myself. AND if I need a nap when I put those babies down, then that’s what needs to happen. One of the biggest reasons I almost quit my job before it was time is that I wasn’t getting enough rest. Our bodies need downtime in order to recover to our full potential.
I wasn’t gonna put this one in here but I think it needs the attention. Balance is hard to come by. Often times people are out of balance in one area or another. Being out of balance can lead to all kinds of illness. If we over work our bodies then sickness. When we overwork our minds depression. If we overwork ourselves in ministry then resentment. Everything needs to have balance. I like how the bible sais our adversary roams about like a lion seeking whom he can devour. When we are out of balance we are susceptible to being devoured by someone or something.
Most of us want to know how to get well from Illness.
Me too. Illness is not fun. Depending on the illness you are fighting makes it even worse. For example: I fight against depression. Depression is an illness. When I was twenty-one I was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and began a seven year nightmare of one medicine after another with more bad results than good ones. When I came off the medicine I had to get the docs permission. Her words were that if I was wrong it would come back and be even worse.
I have been fighting ever since. what I have found in the eight years since that time is that if I can control the hormones then my other symptoms are not bad enough to require pharmaceutical medicines which I believe to be worse for my over all health. But it does mean I have to be on the ball. I have used mostly God in this area to help me overcome a lot of the symptoms I use to have. I still do use him, but I also found a natural method to help control my hormones and now when I remember to take it, I am better.
