How To Make Your Sleep Count For Better Rest
One of the biggest problems today is not getting enough rest. Or not feeling rested after knowing that you got enough sleep. We get up at early hours after going to be late, drive in rush hour traffic and in many cases go to jobs we are unhappy in. Our bills are paid (just barely). And we do this 6 or 7 days a week.
We only have seven days a week. Many of us drive 1 or even 2 hours each way. If you have music in your car it is a blessing and if your radio isn’t working a curse. Coffee is a must, without it others might not survive our terrible mood about having to go to work at all. Sleep deprived. Check out this article about rest.
Does this sound like you or someone you know?
So how do we feel more rested? Get more sleep. Right? Maybe. What if the real answer is getting the right amount of sleep and taking regular weekly breaks. Isn’t it interesting how God said he worked six days creating the world and everything in it and then on the seventh day he rested?
What if we are supposed to be doing the same thing? Work our 6 days then rest one. AND on that day of rest do not work. That includes not thinking about work. Not dreading work if it’s Sunday. When I worked the day job, we were working 6 days but it felt like seven days. We needed to be working 5 days instead of 6.
I think because a majority of us were very unhappy with how the company was turning out we would totally stress out about going back. The worry and stress started the day before work. So, our day off was Sunday and we were thinking of work. Which I’m thinking ruined our day off. It might just be me and not this way for everyone.
Taking A Day Off
Taking a day off is super important. What activities can you do on your day off so that you can feel more rested? Maybe going for a walk in a new place you heard about. Taking a short trip to a scenic part of your town or maybe going to the mall.
Rest looks different for all of us. Staying home and watching movies all day may be your dream. If your out and about all day that might sound like heaven. Doing a good house clean can sometimes feel like rest. It’s work but if it’s not your day job and you hardly ever get to do it. It could feel like rest.
Getting Enough Sleep
Most of this is not about sleep as people usually get enough sleep. But we have to include it because it also is super important and some of us don’t. When I went to my day job I was not getting enough sleep. I know 5 and 6 hours is enough for some people, but not me. Lack of sleep also affects concentration.
We have so many things keeping us awake at night. Preventing us from getting enough sleep. Things like TV, computer, books or bars, and company. It’s nice to hang out with friends but doing it all the time might be preventing you from getting enough rest.
I know I harp on this one a lot. But that’s only because of how important it is. In this day and age when we eat too many processed foods and sugars, we need to be getting in regular exercise. A good way to feel rested and get enough sleep is to get enough movement and exercise during the day to make us feel tired at night.
Exercise keeps our hearts fit by giving it a workout thereby making it able to handle more stress. So that when we put unnecessary stress or anxiety on it, it doesn’t give out on us. Exercise also helps our bodies process our foods more adequately. Food is a major factor in this but the exercise helps too!
Eating foods that are good for us also puts less stress on our bodies. Too much sugar, caffeine or carbs effects our bodies in the negative. If we eat these before bed it is even worse and may be preventing us from getting enough sleep.
Not only that but there are some foods that naturally help you feel more rested. Here are some people who know a whole lot more than I do. I found this today and it looks promising.
The point I’m trying to make is that we need to make good healthy habits and choices for better health. Many of us are trying to learn this now. I am one of them. I struggle with everything that I write about, but I write about it because I know I am not the only one. Someday I will not struggle with it anymore.
You don’t have to either. Struggle with it that is. There is enough info out there to help us. All we have to do is figure out how to use it. If you have already figured it out then I hope you are willing to encourage someone else who may be struggling with it as well. One key is to get enough sleep and to feel rested. All of it works together for better overall health.
